As the year draws to a close, I like to look back and consider what I’ve done, and why I do it.
First, I like to tally up the time I’ve spent working on writing; let myself feel a little pride in that, and set a slightly higher goal for next year.
This year I was able to spend 534 hours working on writing, 58.75 more than last year.
Write Thoughts saw 96 new posts, including An Evening With Neil Gaiman, Using Perspective, and The Journals of Bob Drifter
All told Write Thoughts has grown to 174 posts, including 64 writing posts (index), and 62 reviews (index).
But many things can’t be measured.
Writing is often thought of as a solitary activity, but that’s less than half of the picture. The act of writing is really only the beginning. Once we finish writing, most of us start looking for readers. At first we’re looking for feedback, to help us revise and improve upon our creation, but later it’s an open invitation to anyone who wants to have an interesting conversation with someone.
I’m really very grateful to have the means and the opportunity to have so many interesting conversations. People here are so supportive, and freely so. Everyone’s trying to learn and grow, but everyone’s also taking the time to share what they learn, and I think that’s truly wonderful.
There are ways in which this has been a difficult year, but whether you knew it or not, many of you helped make it easier.
