Writing is a long, drawn out process; a journey from the vaguest of ideas to something so real and concrete that it can almost feel like memory. Through countless drafts the author refines their work, carefully evaluating the pacing, the characters, word choices, and sentence structure. Until at long last, it’s done. Details & Description 203-02

In photography they say the act of looking at one thing is also the act of looking away from something else. The same can be said of description. When writing description, it’s important to consider what’s left unsaid. For example, a character stands in the middle of a street. Audiences will either assume that the street is empty or that the character is ignoring the activity around them, both of which convey meaning.

Chill

It was raining again. Thick, heavy drops that pelted the ground like shells. Tom watched from his window, wondering what others might see if they looked in. rivulets of water ran down the glass. Samantha stirred in her sleep, a forgotten book slowly sliding down her lap; hints of a smile as she turned to face him. How he longed to wake her, to see her smile. But his hands were cold, and she was warm, under her blanket.
